Daily Goals

Today's Thought

You are reading from the book Today's Gift.

Something can't happen every day. You get up, go to work, come back, eat again, enjoy some leisure, go back to bed. Now that's plenty for most folks.--Ntozake Shange

When we were all little kids, before we started school, the days felt so long it seemed like we had time for everything.

But when we started school, we had to start living by the clock, and in this way, we became very grown up. Sometimes we feel angry about living by the clock, all of us who are first grade and older! But there are things we can do to help us live with these limits.

First, we can learn to set a goal for each day, and once we have reached that goal--whether it's doing spelling homework, mopping the floor, or writing three business letters--we can announce to whoever happens to be around, "Now that I've completed that, I don't have to worry about one more thing to feel worthwhile."

Second, we can believe what we said! We can relax, do something fun, enjoy the pleasures that the day offers.

Needed to read this today. I'm beginning to think that I am addicted to chaos. I can so easily take a perfectly good day and completely fuck it up all by myself. My sponsor has told me for years that my troubles are mostly of my own making.....and it is so true. The bottom line is I don't want to live like this anymore.....I have also been told that when the pain is bad enough I will take the actions necessary to change things. Well I'm at that point......so now I must figure out what action is necessary to change things. For tonight I am starting with prayer, a call to my sponsor and a meeting with her. That is the next right action and I will figure out the rest after I get through that.

you've come to a wonderful place in recovery... (at least that my opinion...) You're getting ready to add another "growth ring." I am sure you and your sponsor will hash all this out and you'll make some adjustments to your spiritual program. What do they say, pain is the touchstone of change/growth? So it seems that I too, like you need some pain and chaos in my life in order to see that I need to change/grow...

good luck!

I stopped wearing a watch a long time ago but last night I had a dream that I had no concept of time what so ever...it was scary.

For me it is not about AA or recovery, it is about being a better person. When I read and work on becoming a better person, everything is still there. It is what I do with it that makes me better as a person. Here is what I read yesterday.

Every one of us who is trying to be a better person is like the sculptor. We envision who we want to be and what kind of qualities we believe in. Some of these qualities might be kindness, good self-esteem, the ability to love and feel loved. If we are honest, we must also look with the artist's eye at our faults. We might see some jealousy and resentment, or feelings of superiority. Our faults, human as they are, are like unwanted marble that keeps our most loving selves from taking shape. Carving away at our faults is hard work, and sometimes-even hurts. Yet we do not do this work alone--we can only do it with the help of our God.

I am sooooooo tired of pain being a motivator! What's next after that?
Thanks for this post,

Sponsors have a habit of telling us it's down to us...
